Ready? Hair. Action!
If you're a natural hair transitioner like me, you're probably aware of the effort it takes to manage two textures and create hair styles that don't whisper "boring" in your neighbors ear, without pulling your hair out. To prevent hair breakage, it's time to get serious about your hair.
Here are a few top tips for natural hair transitioners:
Maintain a hair diary. It is beneficial to track which products you are using so that when you lose an unusual amount of hair, you can pinpoint the culprit. A hair diary can track hair loss, growth progress, what your hair like and dislikes, what makes your hair thrive, which styles worked best, which products worked best, how many inches you've chopped and much more.
Keep track of hair loss. Knowing your average amount of hair loss when you shampoo and detangle will help you to recognize when you have a problem. If you lose more than usual, take a step back to figure out what you did different that may have caused it.
Do not detangle or comb dry hair. It is best not to detangle or comb dry hair because your transitioning hair is already weak and you'll cause unnecessary breakage. It's much easier to detangle wet and well conditioned hair.
Deep condition. Deep condition. Deep condition, seal with an oil and cover with a plastic cap or use a steamer as often as you need it. If your ends are dry, you need it.
Be careful with heat. Heat can damage your natural hair if not applied properly and/or too often. Hair can burn and ruin your curl pattern. Please be careful.
Eat Healthy. Proper nutrition will help you maintain strong strands and as you transition you need your hair to be as strong as it can be. Fish and nuts are great sources of protein.
Does you hair like protein? You could do a strand test a few times to check your hairs sensitivity to protein. For some, protein is a lifesaver because it strengthens hair but for others, too much protein can wreak havoc causing dry, resistant hair.
Be kind to your strands. Hair is delicate. Patience is a must. Detangling and styling can be frustrating if you have not given your hair exactly what it likes. If you find yourself getting frustrated, stop and take a break. Also, doing your hair when tired can prove to be the cause of frustration.
I'm sure there are many more best practices to add to this list. What are your top tips? Give em' up!
Until then, see ya lata'!
