Shampooing for Long Tresses

Although my primary concern for my hair while I'm transitioning from relaxed to natural hair is achieving healthy hair, one of my goals is to challenge my hair to grow long and strong. I'd like to see how long my hair can get and to do that I have to retain the length I achieve. Kinky, curly, coily hair is prone to breakage especially during the transition phase. If you read my blog or watch my YouTube videos, you're probably aware of my recent hair breakage. My hair breakage was due to trying a new product that was not beneficial for my hair type. I vowed to continue to keep my hair regimen simple and uncomplicated. However, I am still on the hunt for a non-sulfate moisturizing shampoo.

The belief that black women don't need to shampoo often is a myth. The dead skin and product build-up layered on the scalp can hinder growth. Just like the skin on our face and body, the skin on our scalp benefits from being clean, allowing hair follicles to breathe. In addition, detangling can be very challenging leading to a lack of desire to shampoo weekly, especially if it's not accompanied by the right product. Finding a shampoo and conditioning treatment that makes detangling easy is critical to preventing breakage and retaining length. I'm on the hunt for a non-sulfate or gentle shampoo that can get my hair and scalp clean while providing moisture at the same time. I'll be sure to update you on what I find.

My Natural Hair Transition

The natural hair community is growing by leaps and bounds as women and men with curly, kinky, coily hair embrace their natural texture. There are many reasons why someone may decide to transition from relaxed to natural hair and the benefits of doing so can be invaluable. This video is my first length check video at 5 months into my transition and in it I briefly explain my reasons for going natural. For updates on my natural hair transition, visit my YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/JustNaumi. My next length check and hair update are coming soon so be sure to check back. Enjoy!

A Lesson for Product Junkies

I'm not a hair product junkie! I promise! I raise my right hand and swear. I was excited about purchasing and trying the Aussie Moist hair conditioner not only because I use the shampoo but also because I've heard many great things about the conditioner in product reviews. What encouraged me to try it was the expectation of moisture. As you know, transitioning hair needs a lot of moisture and my hair loves, loves, loves it.

I've been transitioning from relaxed (texurized) hair to natural hair for 7 months now and my conditioner of choice has been the Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Deep Conditioner. I have experienced very little breakage using this product and I have nothing but great things to say about it. I'm still questioning why I decided to try something new. While I didn't plan to stop using the Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner, I chose to give the Aussie Moist conditioner a try.

Hello "Brow Doctor"

Now that my eyelashes are long and luscious, I've decided that my brows need a boost. Over the past several months I've noticed thinning of my eyebrows. They're not painfully thin but they seem to be more sparse than usual. As you know, natural eyebrows are in for 2011, so no more over-plucking ladies!

Lucky for me I've been holding on to a tube of Brow Doctor by Beauty Society that I purchased at IECSC Las Vegas in 2010 for about 10 months now and I'm finally ready to put it to the test. Brow Doctor is a clear gel formula that is supposed to tame unruly eyebrows and it includes the Enormous Lash formula that enhances the growth and thickness of natural lashes. The product claims to bring back the fullness of youthful brows when applied daily. It's free of parabens and prostaglandins.

I began using the formula today with a swipe of the gel onto my clean brows. It goes on smoothly with a "mascara type" applicator. With no hair out of place, my brows are perfectly groomed. I'm anxious to see the results.

See ya lata' beauties!
