Quick Tip for Transitioning Hair and Working Out
Exquisite Tresses on Twitter asked, "Do you have any tips for transitioning hair and working out?" This is a common question as naturals and those transitioning to natural hair lean towards becoming more fit and healthy. Shrinkage and sweating out your twist out are legitimate concerns.
Sporty Afros, whose mission is to establish a social platform for fitness and effective hair care for black women, may offer a number of effective tips and I recommend checking them out at http://www.sportyafros.com. Before you pay them a visit, here is the best tip I can give for maintaining transitioning hair and working out:
As a 19 month transitioner, my tip is simple. Combine your hair care routine with your workout schedule. It may take some rearrangement of your calendar and daily activities, and you may need to beat the sun out of bed but this in my opinion is the best way to make fitness and natural hair work for you.
Exercise n Wash
Work out on the days that you plan to wash or deep condition your tresses. Why? Natural hair thrives on water and this may be just the push you need to give your hair what it needs by rinsing your strands with water more than once per week. Secondly, just like the skin on your face and body, working out opens the pores and its the best time for a deep cleanse. Your scalp health will thrive.
Braid or Twist and Go
If you work out everyday, manipulating your hair each day while in the transitioning phase can wreak havoc on your tresses and is not a realistic expectation. Prepping your hair for a braid or twist out prior to working out could save you some time. Braid or twist your hair, tie with a scarf, and work it out.
Wrap those Edges
If you're short on time or maybe you're just having a lazy day, the least you can do to maintain your style and protect your hair, is wrap your edges.
There's no way to get around dedicating a little more time to maintaining your natural hair while striving to stay fit but your hair and body will thank you.
Hope my tips were helpful.
